It is as if we expect God to split the sky and send down a special beam that will automatically make us perfect and sinless, so that we will never sin again.
This thinking is simply not True, and it can actually be dangerous to our growth and development in Christ. When Christians mess up, immediately they are attacked by the enemy who then tries to make them question their salvation.
We often hear things like…
“You aren’t really a christian”
“how could a real Christian do that?”
“You can’t be saved when you still are messing up everyday”
These are common attacks that Christians find going on in their minds usually after they come short or make a mistake.
But it is important that we understand exactly how God sees the us. When God looks at believers he sees a child. But not just any child, but his child.
Now imagine you see your baby trying to learn to walk, wouldn’t be proud?
Now what If you see your baby trying to walk and they fall or trip…
would you be Angry at them?
Heavens no! Of course not!
Why? Because they are a baby who is learning to walk on their own, so of course they are going to fall until they become strong enough to keep their balance!
Likewise, God is our heavenly father! He is proud of ALL believers who are striving for righteousness, even when they fall!
Although it would make things a lot easier for the most of us if God just made us perfect over night, it simply does not work that way.
Although God could do this, if he did…
he would be doing the work for us instead of with us.
God is all powerful, but when it comes to humankind he chooses to work with us when it comes our spiritual growth.
although he does not make us all perfect with the snap of his finger,
he does however sends his holy spirit to guide and to comfort us on our journey to becoming more like him.
The scripture says…
(Rom 8:26) In the same way the Spirit also comes to help us with our weaknesses. For we do not know how we ought to pray; the Spirit himself pleads with God for us in groans that words cannot express.
(Rom 8:27) And God, who sees into our hearts, knows what the thought of the Spirit is; because the Spirit pleads with God on behalf of his people and in accordance with his will.
So as we can see, although we are not perfect we are striving for perfection.
And not only are we striving for perfection, but the spirit of God is striving with us to help bring us closer and closer to perfection.
This does not mean that we will not make mistakes, but what this means is that God himself with help us with our weaknesses (infirmities).
Sometimes we allow ourselves to get depressed because we made a mistake that we actually can be placed under bondage by our sins.
But remember that Jesus bore all of your sins that day on the cross.
We have no right to feel condemned by your sin because Jesus was condemned for our sins already. We are attempting to pay a debt that was already paid!
(Rom 8:1) There is no condemnation now for those who live in union with Christ Jesus.
But we must realize that as long as we are in this Natural body…
sin, death, and corruption will always be with us.
But unlike the world, as believers we should celebrate because we have a future hope!
Our future hope is the day that God will restore all things and reveal us as his children!
(Rom 8:19) All of creation waits with eager longing for God to reveal his children.
(Rom 8:20) For creation was condemned to lose its purpose, not of its own will, but because God willed it to be so. Yet there was the hope
(Rom 8:21) that creation itself would one day be set free from its slavery to decay and would share the glorious freedom of the children of God.
So although we do not quite visually appear to be the children of God,
the spirit of God is a witness that we are indeed God’s children!
(Rom 8:16) God’s Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God’s children.
And once that day comes, we will actually be changed to look like our father!
So yes we are not perfect now, but keep taking baby steps toward Christ…
you resemble him more than you think 🙂
